
The Thru the Lock and Respectful Entry. “The forgotten side of Forcible Entry” course will provide each student with the essentials of forcible entry/ respectful entry and navigate them Thru the Lock. Not only does the course cover why lock recognition and respectful entry are essential skills for the modern day progressive fire service, but also provides hands on training in this specialized area. Students will be shown and instructed how to identify some of the most common residential and commercial style locks. The subject matter will provide students options on how to bypass/pull locks using tried and true methods taught by Fire Service experts across the nation. Students will also have the opportunity to learn how to defeat/bypass accessory and secondary locks with little to no damage to the structure. This will create a foundation from which the student can take back to their department and have the ability to put into service their very next shift.

Justin Matusiak is a 17 year veteran of the fire service who started out as a volunteer with Escambia County, FL Fire Rescue. In 2012 he was hired by the Tallahassee Fire Department where he spent eight years. He then decided to move back to the panhandle of Florida. He is currently employed with the Holley-Navarre Fire District in Navarre,FL as an Engineer. He is assigned to Engine 41, “The Swamp” on A Watch. He holds a Bachelors degree in Fire Science Administration from Waldorf University, as well as, an Associates degree in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University. Additionally, he holds multiple Florida State Fire College certifications. He designed and implemented a Thru the Lock program for the Holley- Navarre Fire District and created custom built Thru the Lock bags that are carried on all front line apparatus. He is also an adjunct instructor with Beyond the Basics Fire Training and Consulting LLC. For which he teaches Thru the Lock and Forcible Entry. He as taught classes as a lead and adjunct instructor at both the North Florida and Ancient City Fire Expo’s respectively.
